Assumption Ladies Book Club – July Meeting
We are pleased to announce our next book selection for our reading group: The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton.
We will be reading G.K. Chesterton’s classic work, which remains one of his most significant contributions to Christian apologetics and cultural thought. Written in 1925 as a response to H.G. Wells’ Outline of History, The Everlasting Man is divided into two parts—“On the Creature Called Man” and “On the Man Called Christ”—and presents Chesterton’s conviction that the central figure of human history is Jesus Christ. Blending wit, philosophy, and imaginative insight, Chesterton challenges modern assumptions about religion, history, and humanity, offering a compelling argument that Christianity uniquely makes sense of the human story.
This work has had a profound influence on many readers over the years, including a young C.S. Lewis, and continues to be regarded as a landmark in Christian literature.
For this reading, we are suggesting the 2024 Word on Fire edition, which includes the full text of Chesterton’s original work (approximately 288 pages) along with extensive commentary and guidance by Dale Ahlquist. This edition (approximately 520 pages) provides helpful historical, literary, and theological context that may enrich the reading experience, especially given Chesterton’s wide range of references and distinctive style.
That said, participants are welcome to read either edition. Those who prefer to engage solely with Chesterton’s original text are encouraged to do so, while others may appreciate the added insight of the annotated version.
We look forward to gathering together on July 12th to reflect on this remarkable work and its enduring vision of faith, reason, and the meaning of history.
